Somerset Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Service
Health and wellbeing, Social, emotional and mental health difficultiesDescription
We are a specialist NHS team consisting of advanced nurse practitioner, nurse practitioners and a consultant psychiatrist. If you are 18 years or over, we can help diagnose ADHD, offer treatments and ongoing annual reviews, as needed. SAAS is primarily an assessment and diagnostic service only. We do not care co-ordinate or manage risk.
We ask that referrals are completed via your GP, because they will be able to provide an overview of your current circumstances as well as your medical history.
When deciding whether someone is appropriate for our service, we will be assessing the referral information provided by your GP in accordance with DSM-V Criteria for ADHD. The diagnosis of ADHD in adults cannot be confirmed unless your symptoms have been present since childhood.
Treatment for ADHD usually helps to relieve the symptoms, this will then reduce the impact of the condition on day-to-day life. In adults, ADHD treatment primarily involves medication. Psychological therapies particularly for associated mental health conditions can also be of significant benefit, however, are not currently offered by this service.
