Polden Bower School
Special SchoolDescription
Elmwood School is part of the Elmwood and Penrose Federation.
Elmwood School is a secondary special school for students aged 11 to 16 years old with PMLD Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties, SLD Severe Learning Difficulties, MLD Moderate Learning Difficulties, SEMH Social Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties and complex medical needs. Elmwood is co located with Robert Blake Science College and is based on Hamp Avenue, Bridgwater.
Elmwood is one of two special schools in the Elmwood & Penrose Federation. We have a number of pathways a student can follow depending on their individual needs.
Students in Key Stage 3, generally follow the National Curriculum. Students are assigned to a tutor base and they stay with this teacher and group of learners for all subjects except English and Maths. For the Core subjects which take place each morning, students are streamed into appropriate groups. They work with different teachers and with different students.
Students in Key Stage 4 follow an accredited curriculum. This is still based around the National Curriculum, but is focused on preparing our students for adult life and their next steps in education and learning.
For students who have complex learning and sensory needs, they follow the Multi sensory Curriculum. This is an early developmental curriculum which focuses on embedding key skills.
Elmwood School is co located with Robert Blake Science College, this co location enables our students to access specialist teaching spaces within a mainstream secondary school, these include Music and Drama, Food Technology, Design and Technology and Science.
Elmwood School has exclusive use of a range of outdoor areas including Adventure Play, games court, sensory garden, orchard and horticulture area and use of shared areas for multi sports and forest school activities.
Elmwood School has a separate 6th Form for 16 to 19 years old known as The Jean Rees Centre which is based on Chilton Trinity Campus.
Elmwood & Penrose Federation comprises of two schools that are part of the all through 4 to 19 years school approach to providing a different educational experience for students in Sedgemoor and other areas of Somerset and surrounding counties. Students who attend our schools all have Education Health and Care Plans and are referred to us from the SEND Panel at Somerset County Council.
Our Federation mantra is Believe you can. We have high expectations for our students and prepare our students for life and work. Core to this is the development of growing independence, Transitions between primary, secondary and out 6th Form provision are important milestones in every childs life and we believe that these should be marked as rights of passage to adulthood for all children and young people. Our Federation is proud to be able to offer new and well resourced facilities and being an active part of the local community.
We are a Rights Respecting School.
