Unauthorised use of a highway verge

What we will do depends on the nature of the obstruction

About the service

We control the unauthorised use of signs, goods or stones displayed on highway verges, to ensure the safety of the travelling public. You can report unauthorised use of a highway verge here.

Report an obstruction on a pavement, road or verge

This form has 2 pages and will take approximately 2 minutes to complete.

When you contact us, please give us the following information:

  • Your name and phone number
  • The location of the sign, goods or stones, including the road name
  • If it is outside a specific property

What we will do is determined by what the obstruction is and, where appropriate, will be in accordance with the Highway Safety Inspection Manual.

We respond to information received and inspections undertaken. We will remove any obstructions that are found to be a hazard to highway users as defined by our policy.

We also investigate the placing of unauthorised hedges, fences or structures on the highway verge.

Reporting a problem outside of our hours

If you need to report a problem outside of our normal working hours (Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5pm) and you believe it is urgent and a risk to public safety, please phone 0300 123 2224.
