Hedgerow regulations and apply for hedgerow removal

Apply to get permission to remove a countryside hedgerow

Introduction

Hedgerows on non-domestic land, around fields and along roadsides are usually protected by the Hedgerow Regulations 1997. Hedges around and within gardens are normally exempt from the Hedgerow Regulations. If you want to remove a section of such hedgerow, please visit the Planning Portal to apply.

Apply for permission

Under the Hedgerow Regulations 1997 (SI No. 1160) it is against the law to remove most countryside hedgerows without permission.

Before undertaking any works, you must gain permission. Please submit a hedgerow removal notice to the Council’s Trees and Landscape Team.

Application Form – Hedgerow Removal Notice

If Somerset Council deny the removal of an important hedgerow, they must let you know within 6 weeks.

If you remove a hedgerow without permission, you may face an unlimited fine, and may have to replace the hedgerow.
