Young Somerset introduced a supported internship in September 2024 and is now ready to recruit for its next intake!
At Young Somerset, we have a shop and café known as Bold and Brave. In September 2024 we began our first supported internship programme. This programme runs for one academic year and offers support for adults 16-25 with an EHCP to develop skills for the workplace. We currently offer support to 10 interns who all get experience working in Retail, Hospitality and Business and Digital. Alongside this, the interns attend college with Somerset Skills and Learning to gain qualifications in Maths/English, Food Hygiene, Manual Handling etc.
The programme has a dedicated team of Job Coaches and is designed to provide work experience, training and qualifications to enable the interns to achieve paid employment at the end of the term.
Our interns have provided us with such positive feedback, explaining how they value the support from Job Coaches to slowly introduce them into a workplace. We offer a unique setting where the interns have the opportunity to work within our own establishments to gain the practical skills of working in Retail and Hospitality, before showing these skills off to external providers. Our vision is to support all interns into a paid job at the end of the programme, so watch this space!
We want to continue the Supported Internship into the next academic year and so we are currently recruiting for our next cohort to start in September 2025. We have information days upcoming on Wednesday 26th March and Wednesday 16th April at the Taunton Library at 11am.
