Somerset Educational Psychology Service (ELSA) recently gained feedback from pupils who have taken part in ELSA sessions to understand their views on the effectiveness of ELSA.

What is ELSA?
ELSA stands for Emotional Literacy Support Assistant. Teaching Assistants, and other staff who support pupils (e.g. PFSAs, etc.), who are trained as ELSAs provide intervention to support the pupil’s emotional development (e.g. to understand their emotions and respect the feelings of those around them). For more information see About ELSA – ELSA Network.

The role of ELSAs has grown significantly in Somerset since it was introduced 10 years ago, and we are currently offering training and ongoing supervision to over 350 qualified ELSAs across the county. Training is available two or three times each academic year (depending on demand) for teaching assistants working in Somerset education settings.

Our ELSA training always receives positive reviews and spaces fill up fast! Our autumn ELSA training has already begun, and our spring ELSA training begins on 3rd February 2025 – Click here to book ELSA training: ELSA Training | Support Services for Education.

What do pupils think of ELSA?
Somerset Educational Psychology Service recently gained feedback from pupils who have taken part in ELSA sessions to understand their views on the effectiveness of ELSA. 72 pupils completed the survey and we found:

• 94% of pupils felt more confident in managing their feelings after ELSA sessions.
• All pupils found the activities in ELSA sessions ‘helpful’ or ‘somewhat helpful’ in understanding their emotions;
• All pupils felt comfortable talking to their ELSA at least some of the time.
• 71% of pupils learned new ways to cope with difficult emotions during ELSA sessions.

How much did pupils enjoy their ELSA sessions?

We are continually reviewing and updating the ELSA training based on feedback received, and to ensure pupils get the most benefit from ELSA interventions. Recent updates to our training include: being even more interactive; further videos, case studies, and group activities; sharing and exploring additional resources, and more!
