Children from Primary schools across Somerset competed once again in the annual Somerset Children’s Parliament competition on Monday 17th June. The winners were:
St Mary’s Primary School, with a presentation entitled: We have a litter bit of a problem!
Ashcott Primary School: Road safety in our community.
Runner’s up were: Combe St Nicholas Primary who talked about ‘Courageous advocacy’ at their school and Wellsprings Primary, with a presentation, ‘Why is the rainforest important to us?’
Congratulations should also go to all children who took part – ALL the speeches were inspiring, covering a diverse range of topics concerning children right now, including: using kindness to remove bullying from school, connecting communities, mental health and well-bring, recycled artwork and reducing fruit waste.
The event provides an important opportunity for children to develop confidence, hone presentation skills and have their voices heard by Cllr Heather Shearer (Lead Member for Children, Families and Education) alongside leaders from across the education, business and charity sectors. Judges were impressed with children’s knowledge of and passion for their subjects, as well as the high standards of presentational skills, especially when addressing questions from the audience. This year, children took part in a workshop, led by members of Somerset Youth Parliament. Josh and Abi, pupils were challenged to think about their own communities and inspired them to get involved.
Well done to EVERY child – they all showed confidence, teamwork skills, imagination and a wonderful sense of optimism – in the words of Greta Thunberg, they have all proved, ‘you’re never too small to make a difference!’
