Somerset Council and West Somerset Railway PLC have jointly submitted a Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC) to the Government to restore scheduled train services between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard.
In what would be a significant step towards boosting local transport choice and preserving heritage, the business case supports the long-term sustainability of the West Somerset Railway, one of Britain’s premier heritage railways.
The first step is the funding of a full business case for the scheme which will include local consultation on the final proposals. If the full business case is approved then reintroduction of scheduled trains between Taunton and Bishops Lydeard would follow with the scope to operate some services to Minehead in the future.
The SOBC proposes developing Bishop Lydeard as a “park-and-ride” hub for commuters and tourists, to offer easier access to train services with plans for a year-round service with an approximate hourly timetable, coordinated with local bus services, particularly around Taunton.
The Business Case, developed in conjunction with Great Western Railway and Network Rail, has received strong backing from local MPs, councils, and tourism and heritage organisations in Taunton and West Somerset.
It aligns with the Council’s strategic aims to improve social mobility, and access to education and employment for local communities. This project is also an important part of a wider transport agenda to reduce car usage and promote environmentally sustainable options that will contribute to Somerset’s net zero goal.
The Government has been asked for a modest funding package of £137,000 to take the proposals forward to Full Business Case stage.
Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said:
We are excited about the potential of this project to provide a significant transport link to our local communities and while doing so preserve a vital piece of our heritage.
This initiative will enhance connectivity, support our environmental goals, and contribute to the economic vitality of the region.
Jonathan Jones-Pratt, Chair of West Somerset Railway PLC said:
We are extremely grateful to the team who have developed and supported this project. We await the opportunity to develop the final business case and if successful this will play a key part in the West Somerset Railway’s future.
