Somerset Council is pleased to announce that the newly refurbished Tor Sports and Leisure facility in Glastonbury will reopen to the public on 3 February.
This significant milestone marks the completion of the first project under the Glastonbury Town Deal, and showcases the town’s commitment to enhancing local amenities for all residents and visitors.
The £2.2 million refurbishment has transformed the council-owned Tor Sports and Leisure facility in Glastonbury into a modern community sports and leisure hub.
Delivered on time and within budget, Somerset Council appointed Pick Everard as project manager and quantity surveyor. Operating through Perfect Circle and accelerated under the SCAPE Consultancy framework, Pick Everard worked alongside construction contractors Rigg Construction (Southern) Ltd.
The Council has now handed the site back to its tenant and leisure operator Fusion Lifestyle whose valuable input has been integral to the design and build to ensure the new facility is fit for purpose and offers visitors a great experience across all aspects of sports and leisure. The Council would also like to take this opportunity to thank all the trades and suppliers who have helped deliver this project.
This new space can benefit everyone, from local sports clubs to community groups and casual users seeking recreational activities. It now features improved access to modern facilities and flexible multi-use spaces designed to accommodate a wide range of sports and leisure activities, including a brand-new state-of-the-art gym, newly refurbished bar, meeting and event rooms, changing place facility and much more.
Sustainability has been a key focus throughout the project helping Glastonbury become a zero-carbon town. New energy-efficient measures have been installed including extra insulation added to the roof. Contractors working on the project were sourced locally and materials from the old building reused, wherever possible.
Tor Leisure will also soon benefit from another Town Deal project, and Glastonbury Clean Energy will be adding rooftop solar panels to generate clean energy this spring.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Communities, Housing Revenue Account, Culture and, Equalities and Diversity said:
The former Tor Sports & Leisure site has long needed enhancement, and the state of the building had previously hindered its potential. Thanks to the investment secured from the Glastonbury Town Deal, it’s revitalised, ensuring a secure and vibrant future for local sports clubs and leisure users alike.
Lynne Sedgmore, Chair of the Glastonbury Town Deal Board said:
We are extremely proud to see the first Glastonbury Town Deal project completed and look forward to the positive impacts it will have on our community. This is a time to celebrate and create a brighter future for the town.
Anthony Cawley, Chief Executive Officer at Fusion commented:
The grand reopening of the leisure centre in Tor marks an exciting chapter for both Fusion and the Glastonbury community. As Fusion celebrates its 25thanniversary, this project is a fantastic addition to the town, and it’s bound to become a beloved space for locals and visitors alike.
We have created a truly unique and special community hub for Glastonbury, that offers a fantastic sports and recreational space for residents of any age or ability as well as visitors from outside of the town.
Guy Rossiter, Principal Project Manager at Pick Everard said:
The project has been a real team effort, working closely with Fusion Lifestyle, Somerset Council, the Glastonbury Town Deal board, Rigg Construction and existing users to shape a vision that maximises the beneficial impact of the Glastonbury Town Deal grant funding.
With a focus on essential improvements, including new electrics, heating and enhanced roof insulation, as well as a complete refurbishment of all public user and operator spaces – we’ve helped create a modern, efficient space that will serve the community for years to come while keeping future operational costs down.
Jim Deighton, Contracts Manager at Rigg Construction (Southern) Ltd added:
We are delighted to have been part of the Tor Leisure and Sports Facility project. Seeing it come to completion is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.
We are proud to have contributed to a space that will serve the community for years to come.
To celebrate the completion of the new Tor Sports and Leisure Centre, Fusion Leisure are planning an action packed Grand Open Day on Saturday, 1 March. Glastonbury successfully secured £23.6 million of Towns Fund grant from Government in September 2022 to deliver projects in its Town Investment Plan. It’s been hailed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to grow the local economy, support business opportunities, improve infrastructure and enhance facilities – all of which benefit the town and the surrounding areas.
