Two consultations linked to dog controls in the south Somerset area have been launched by Somerset Council and are now live for public feedback.
The Council is proposing to extend two existing orders; the first relates to a dog exclusion zone in part of the Ninesprings Park in Yeovil while the second covers dog fouling and keeping dogs on leads in public places across the former South Somerset District Council area.
The existing Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) are due to expire, and the Council is seeking the public’s views on extending the orders for a further three years.
A PSPO is an order that is enforceable under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. They are used to protect the public from behaviour that affects the quality of life of people in the area. The PSPO Dog Exclusion Zone has been shown to be effective in dealing with complaints about dogs.
The PSPO relating to Ninesprings covers the lower lake area and would bar people from taking dogs into the zone. Assistance dogs are exempt. The area is rich in wildlife and the order aims to protect the habitat.
The second PSPO relating to dog fouling and keeping dogs on leads aims to protect the public and local wildlife.
The consultations run until 5 May 2025 and can be accessed via the following links:
