On 12 March 2025, the “Celebrating Care Leavers – Making A Difference Together” conference took place at Canalside in Bridgwater. This event highlighted the support and opportunities available to young people leaving care in Somerset.

Somerset is home to over 350 care leavers aged 18 to 25. The conference celebrated their achievements, understood their challenges, and explored how the business community can offer lasting support.

Members of the Somerset in Care and Leaving Care Councils (SiCC and SLCC) delivered powerful performances and shared their personal journeys. Connor, a care leaver who has travelled the world, inspired many with his keynote speech. Representatives from Mulberry and Somerset Council discussed services available to care leavers. Attendees enjoyed an original song, “Promises,” by Rayah, based on her experiences in the care system.

A young care leaver shared:

“Leaving care can be scary, but events like this show us that we’re not alone. The support and opportunities we have seen today have given me motivation and shown me I can achieve anything I want to.”

For those who couldn’t attend, there are still opportunities to pledge support and make a difference. Resources such as the Somerset Leaving Care Local Offer and the SiCC and SLCC Care Councils’ website provide further information and ways to get involved.
