Bridgwater traders and residents are being invited to join a breakfast drop-in this month to learn more about the work that is delivering the town’s Celebration Mile.

The session, from 9am to 11am on 24 February at the Mercure Hotel, is open to everyone.

The event gives people the chance to meet representatives from Somerset Council and contractors Taylor Woodrow, ask questions and sign up for the regular newsletters that are issued.

Celebration Mile is one of 11 projects being delivered as part of Bridgwater Town Deal which is bringing £23.2million of government investment through local projects, helping to boost the social, cultural and economic offerings in the town centre.

The project forms the ‘backbone’ of town centre improvements, aiming to re-energise the centre of Bridgwater by making it more accessible and welcoming to shoppers, residents and visitors.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development, Planning and Assets said:

The drop-in is a great chance to hear first-hand about current and future works along the route of the Celebration Mile. The team is looking forward to meeting as many people as possible.

We can understand the frustrations that some may feel about the closure of Eastover and Clare Street. But work on the scale of the Celebration Mile does involve some disruption and we are trying to keep this to the minimum.

Extra signs are being installed to make people aware that these two streets are very much open for business and accessible for shoppers, residents and businesses.

As part of the works, Clare Street will be closed to vehicles for up to 5 months from Monday 17 February as part of the Celebration Mile project, funded by the Government’s Town Deal scheme. Access for pedestrians and shoppers will be maintained throughout the closure.

Shops, businesses and residents have been visited by a representative from contractors Taylor Woodrow to make sure they are kept informed and have a point of contact for any concerns. They will also be able to confirm any specific access needs.
