It’s December, which means the Christmas countdown has begun in Wells, as the much-loved festive market returns to the city on Saturday 16 December.

It’s not long to wait until over 100 stalls will line the Market Place and Bishop’s Palace Green in the famous mediaeval city, where visitors will find a huge range of unique goods and festive food and drink.

There will also be live music from jazz band, The Grey Dogs, and Martin who plays the trumpet, to bring seasonal music and cheer to the city.

On the day of the market, Lead Member for Communities, Housing and Culture, Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts and Wells Town Crier, Len Sweales, will gather beneath the Bishop’s Eye for speeches and to cut a ceremonial ribbon and officially declare the market open for business.

Cllr Federica Smith-Roberts, said:

I look forward to opening the Christmas market and welcoming visitors and locals to our beautiful city.

Our regular and seasonal traders are excited to greet shoppers with their products – let’s show our support to these small businesses by buying local.

It’s a special time of year to spend with loved ones and we hope the market’s festive atmosphere creates precious memories for all. See you there!

Wells Christmas Market takes place on Saturday 16 December 2023 from 9am-3pm in the Market Place and on the Bishop’s Palace Green.

The festive market is organised by the Mendip Markets team at Somerset Council.
