A new cycling route along Yeovil’s Lyde Road is being delivered by Somerset Council.

The first stage in creating a dedicated cycling route along the road as part of a growing cycling network in the town commenced this week and will take about five weeks to complete.

This initial section is from Camborne Street to Sandringham Road and will be done under traffic lights.

Eventually the route will cover the whole length of Lyde Road and is part of Somerset Council’s commitment to extending cycling routes in Yeovil and the rest of the county.

Dates for the next section are yet to be confirmed, which will see the route delivered up to the Great Mead roundabout.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Digital said:

This is a really positive development for Yeovil – it’s going to give people more choice about how they get around, and it’s part of making Somerset a greener, more sustainable county.

Improving cycling and walking infrastructure is important not just for the environment, as we try to encourage people out of their cars for short journeys, but for people’s health and wellbeing. It’s also crucial in reducing congestion.
