About the job
The role of Area Building Surveyor is an integral position within the Property Department at Somerset Council. Each surveyor is responsible for approximately 35 (non-housing) establishments within a specific part of the County. You will be carrying out surveys and inspections to identify and diagnose the required responsive repairs and preparing specifications for tender of planned maintenance works ranging in value from £5000 to £500,000 for a single project.
Your day-to-day work will involve:
- Preparing work schedules and drafting specifications.
- Instructing contractors to undertake a broad range of building maintenance across Somerset.
- Taking on a key role in repairing and improving out built assets, with the aim of maximising efficiency, modernising service and achieving better suited outcomes and opportunities for service users and customers.
The role involves traveling to various sites in Somerset to inspect and review a range of assets, including those in rural areas.
A full driving licence and access to own vehicle required.
About you

- Have strong up to date knowledge of core building surveying tasks involving project management, procurement and compliance.
- Have a clear understanding of the statutory and regulatory requirements relating to construction works, including CDM health and safety legislation.
- Are qualified in a relevant and recognised discipline with extensive knowledge of building construction, defects and maintenance management.
- Have a positive and flexible ‘can-do’ attitude, with the ability to work independently.
