  • Fixed Term Contract for 12 months.

  • 37 hours per week - Monday to Friday.

What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that.

The decision to move homes is a big one for anyone and our tenants are no different.

They need somebody to reassure them. To support them. To help them make a decision that, if in the bigger picture, it is right for them (without ever pressuring them to do something they’re not ready for).

That’s where you come in.

You’ll be helping people in the Taunton and Wellington areas move to smaller homes if they have extra space they don't need.

This way, more people can have a place to live that’s right for them.

It’s a rewarding job – one where everybody can come away feeling like they’ve won. The tenant you’ve supported to find a new property wins, the tenant that’s moved into their property wins, and of course, you win, because you’ve been able to help make it all happen.

Sometimes you’ll be approaching tenants to talk to them about how a move could work for them, and letting them know about all the support that’s on offer (for example, grants to help them with the cost of moving).

Sometimes it will be the tenants contacting you to find out how it all works, so that they feel better placed to decide what’s right for them.

(This is often a balancing act – you’ll need to use your influencing skills to persuade tenants where you can, while knowing when to stop and accept that the answer is “no” right now. This job isn’t about being aggressive or pushy.)

From there, you’ll be with them every step of the way until they’ve made the move into their new home. There’s a real satisfaction that comes with seeing something like this through from beginning to end.

There are targets involved and you’ll be reporting on your activity, but the team is supportive and it’s not a pressurised environment.

You can work from home, our small office or our depot – but you will often need to visit tenants at their homes, so it’s important that you’re able to do that. The team also come together in person for meetings once or twice per week.

This is a fixed-term contract for 12 months.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be.

You might have a background in Housing, however, we’ve also found that people from Estate Agents’ or Customer Support backgrounds tend to well in this job.

What really matters is that you’re a “people person” – approachable, helpful and supportive. A bit of empathy goes a long way in this kind of job.

If you don’t have a background in housing (and it’s fine if you don’t) you’ll need to be ready to absorb a lot of complex information fairly quickly.

You’ll then need to be able to explain that complex information simply to tenants and be comfortable dealing with any of their questions around housing law and tenancy management.

You might not always know the answer (especially when you start out), however, you’ll be the kind of person who will go away, find out and get back to the tenant as quickly as possible.

We’re proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to enrich our team. You can always contact the hiring manager for a chat if there’s anything you want to talk about before you apply.
