About the job

Some key information

  • Reporting to the Principal Building Surveyor, you will be the Councils Lead Building Services Engineer and manage a small team of engineering professionals.
  • The job role offers a flexible working arrangement, and you’ll split your time between the office, site visits  and working from home.
  • The salary for the role is Grade 8 which is currently £47,754 per annum with 33 days annual leave per year.
  • Training and personal development support opportunities are available.

What will I be doing?

You’ll be managing the small ( but experienced )   Building Services Engineering Team  overseeing  repairs, maintenance, compliance and delivery of project work  for the Council’s portfolio of Corporate buildings and the Council’s maintained school estate.

There’s a lot of flexibility in this job and you’ll be given the freedom to manage your own time and workload. Yes, we have a service to deliver and targets to meet – but we work at a pace that allows you to do a quality job. That balance is important to us.

Your workload will be diverse, so you’ll be dealing with a good cross-section of engineering work. This is a bit of a job advert cliché, but we’ll say it anyway - no two days are the same. You get to meet lots of different people, and solve problems – which is a big part of what engineering is all about, right?

You’ll also be involved in the preparation of annual maintenance programmes, ensuring statutory compliance, overseeing the delivery of day-to-day repairs, maintenance, and improvement projects and providing definitive advice towards the  Councils Engineering policies and procedures.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be but it will really help if you have experience in a similar role covering a full range of building services engineering duties – this could be with a consultancy or with another local authority. We are ideally seeking individuals with demonstrable experience of managing a team of engineering professionals and You’ll also need to be qualified to HNC/D level or equivalent.

We’re proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to enrich our team. You can always contact the hiring manager for a chat if there’s anything you want to talk about before you apply.
