About the job

Some key information

  • The post is full time on a six month contract, with potential to extend. Start date to be confirmed but ideally 2nd September 2024.
  • The role requires working over the usual range of Environmental Protection functions, primarily Statutory Nuisance investigations, but also ideally planning and licensing consultations, public health cases and environmental permitting inspections.
  • This role offers hybrid working allowing you to work from home or a Council Office. You should expect to carry out field work and be office based for on average 2 days per week. The North office is in Bridgwater. The nature of EP work is that it is mainly reactive and some flexibility on this might be needed/possible.
  • Typical hours Monday to Friday between the hours of 8am and 6pm.
  • The post would be eligible for the flexitime scheme.
  • Annual Leave - 30 days per year.

What will I be doing?

We’re working to improve the lives of people in Somerset – and you’ll be a key part of that. Your day-to-day work will involve:

  • Investigating Statutory Nuisance complaints by way of standard procedures, using record forms, the Noise App and installing noise equipment where appropriate.
  • Responding to Planning and Licensing consultations.
  • Carrying out Environmental Permit inspections.
  • Enforcement - collecting evidence under PACE rules.
  • Utilising Civica APP data management system.
  • Liaising with other colleagues in the Environmental Protection Team - Somerset North and other Somerset colleagues on policy/procedural matters.

What kind of experience or qualifications do I need?

We offer ongoing support, training and guidance to help you be the best you can be. But it will really help if you have experience or the following skills:

  • Experience in Statutory Nuisance investigations.
  • Experience in Planning and Licensing consultations including hearings.
  • Environmental Permitting inspection and application experience.
  • Great variety of communication skills for negotiating with customers and liaising with colleagues.
  • Balancing the response required for carrying out both reactive and proactive work simultaneously.

We’re proud to be here for the people of Somerset. And that means everyone in Somerset. An important part of this is ensuring that we are as diverse and inclusive as the people and communities we serve.

We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences to enrich our team. You can always contact the hiring manager for a chat if there’s anything you want to talk about before you apply.
