Introduction
The Home Maintenance Service is a form of assistance to help residents of Somerset with minor home repairs as identified below. These works are available to all tenures to enable everyone that meets the eligibility criteria to access the service, and there is a maximum spend limit per household.
One of our Home Safety Support Officers will visit the property to assess the eligibility of proposed works, and once this has been agreed, they will organise a contractor to carry out the works.
Criteria to be eligible for service
- Someone living in the household with a physical disability or mental health diagnosis
- Client needs to be in receipt of a means tested benefit
- The works required comes under the eligibility of the service
Referrals into the Home Maintenance Service can only be made from professional agencies. We do not accept self-referrals.

Eligible works
Minor Plumbing
- Replacing taps
- Replacing toilet cisterns, levers and ball cock valve
- Bleeding radiators
Minor Electrics
- Security lights, replacing bulbs and starter motors
- Additional electrical sockets
General
- Rehanging doors
- Putting up shelves
- Draught proofing
- Minor damp proofing (if it is a larger issue, please refer to our Safe Warm and Secure grants page)
Indoor Safety
- Tacking carpets and wires
Outdoor safety
- Fix wooden fencing for security or service dog needs
- Repairing loose patio slabs to reduce trips and falls
- Erecting shed for mobility scooters (shed to be provided by client)
- Power washing pathways, patios and decking to prevent slip hazards
- One off garden clearance – to reduce trip hazards
- Supply and fit key safes
