Complain about housing conditions

If you live in a council house – please visit Housing repairs to report a repair.

If you live in rented accommodation that is not owned by the council, and you are experiencing problems with the condition of your property (for example repair or safety issues that your landlord has not resolved) you may wish to make a complaint.  We will offer you advice and where necessary, inspect your home and ask your landlord to carry out repairs.

Before contacting us, please ensure you have

  • put your complaint in writing to your landlord
  • given them reasonable time to arrange and complete any repairs. You should normally allow up to 4 weeks, but this depends on the nature of the problem.

There is further advice on our Housing Standards page where you will also find a link to a template letter from Shelter.

If the disrepair is dangerous and you need to speak to someone, contact us or phone us on 0300 123 2224 and ask for Private Sector Housing.
