The Old Municipal Buildings
Description
The Old Municipal Buildings is a Grade 11 listed building. The east end was a Grammar School built about 1480, refounded by Bishop Fox of Winchester in 1523. It is currently in use by Somerset Registration Service and is bursting with period features such as oak beams and stained-glass windows. The foyer area has Tudor arched double doors and a patterned tiled floor leading to a grand oak staircase. The half landing features a leaded window with stone mullions set back with a deep oak sill. Our largest room, The Tudor Hall, can hold up to 100. Lined with oil portraits below the gothic vaulted ceiling, it has the traditional feel of a church, banqueting hall – or even a hint of Hogwarts! It has a wooden floor, and is normally set for ceremonies with chairs either side of a red carpeted aisle. Heavy oak doors with old ironwork provide external access from two aspects. The Vivary Room was the old boys’ dormitory, with deep stone window alcoves, period fireplace and a unique horseshoe sectional oak table. The Mayor’s Parlour is a cosy study also on the first floor, used for occasional civic gatherings and is also available. Historic England’s website
