Review details

Somerset Council is required to complete a review of all polling districts and polling places within its administrative boundary at least once every five years. This does not prevent changes from being made before the next periodical review.

information

The initial consultation period is until 12 November 2024.

Definitions

Polling district

The polling district is the geographical area created by dividing an electoral area. All wards within the Somerset Council are divided into polling districts, which form the basis upon which the register of electors is produced. Parish boundaries define most polling districts, but there are exceptions. Unless there are special circumstances, each parish must be in a separate polling district.

Polling place

This is the designated area for a polling district where a polling station is located.

Polling station

A polling station is the actual area where the process of voting takes. For example, a room in a community centre or a school.

Aim of the review

The purpose of the review is to make sure:

  • electors have reasonable facilities for voting, which are practicable in the circumstances
  • as far as is reasonable and practicable, the polling places are accessible to all electors and must consider the accessibility needs of those who are disabled

The review will not consider parish, ward boundaries, divisions or parliamentary constituencies.

Providing feedback

We are looking for thoughts and views about the current arrangements as shown in the current schedule of polling districts.

This document shows each polling district and includes information such as:

  • polling district
  • currently designated polling place
  • electorate
  • parliamentary constituency

It also shows the Acting Returning Officer’s proposals and comments. These should be considered when making any response to the review. Any comments on what, if any, changes should be made are welcome.

How to respond

Please respond to the initial consultation period by 12 November 2024.
