Motability Scheme

The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to use their government-funded mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair.

The Scheme is open to anyone who receives one of the following benefits and has at least 12 months award length remaining when they apply.

  • Higher Rate Mobility part of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Higher Rate Mobility part of the Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement

Non-drivers can apply for a car as a passenger, nominating two other people as drivers, and a parent or carer can apply on behalf of a child aged 3 or older.

You can find more information on the Motability Scheme website.

Mobility equipment

NHS choices has information about mobility equipment, wheelchairs and scooters.

There are charities that specialise in supplying all kinds of mobility equipment not available on the NHS. This includes powered, manual or sports wheelchairs, walkers, trikes, scooters and car seats.

You can also find information about the Shop Mobility scooter hire scheme on their website.
