About Child Tax Credit

Child Tax Credit has been replaced by Universal Credit in Somerset and so is only open to existing Working Tax credit customers. Child Tax Credit may not be paid for more than 2 children, if the 3rd or subsequent child was born on or after 6 April 2017, exemptions apply.

Child tax credit is an income-related allowance for parents and carers of children or young people who are still in full-time education. You don’t need to be working to claim child tax credit. You get money for each child that qualifies and child tax credit won’t affect your child benefit.

You could get Child Tax Credit for each child you’re responsible for if they’re:

  • Under 16
  • Under 20 and in approved education or training

You can find out more about Child Tax Credit and help if you have a disabled child on the GOV.UK website.
