Our children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) need you

OverviewThe Inclusion Champion's roleRecruiting now

Overview

In 2021, the Inclusion Champions Network was established, uniting a dedicated group of employees and volunteers from across the system in Somerset. Our primary goal is to create and embed an inclusive culture that supports individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across our organisations.

To equip our Champions with the necessary skills and knowledge, they have actively participated in comprehensive training sessions facilitated by a wide variety of organisations. These sessions have proven invaluable in enhancing their understanding of SEND and promoting inclusivity. The role is varied, and works to raise awareness, shift practice to improve inclusion, and continually responds to issues and themes raised.

The Inclusion Champion's role

We have a great bunch of people across our system who it is very clear want to champion Inclusion and make a difference.  Somerset Inclusion Champions have communication platforms in which they can share information, connect and learn from each other.

Inclusion Champion group activities are in development to enable and assist upskilling and knowledge. These may range from:

  • Somerset Special School visits
  • Shadowing different parts of the system
  • Learning days
  • Short webinars
  • Volunteer events
  • Network social event, such as a beach walks
  • Fundraising events

Recruiting now

We are excited to announce that we are always recruiting additional champions.  You don’t have to be working in a SEND service, or even in a people-facing role, and you do not need to consider your job title, grade, role or employer or volunteer status.  We need Inclusion Champions EVERYWHERE!

You’ll be provided with training, development and support that includes:

  • Initial training – ½ day online and 1 day face to face.
  • Working closely with young people with SEND and Somerset Parent Carer Forum to understand how to be a great champion for their interests;
  • Attending networking and development opportunities to share things you are learning, challenges you’re facing and tools that you’ve found along the way with other Inclusion Champions;
  • Ongoing training in the skills and tools you will need to change and challenge Somerset’s inclusion culture.
