Introduction

Westminster Street in YeovilThis key gateway into the town centre is heavily used. We wanted to ensure that when people first step into the town, they see something they like, they find it appealing and want to come back to Yeovil because of the pleasant experience.

Key changes

Five key changes to the area:

  • Additional pedestrian space – As part of the changes in the Westminster Street area, footpaths have been widened to provide additional pedestrian space. This has enabled those walking to and from Tesco for example, to walk with ease and for footfall traffic to flow better.
  • Improved natural stone paving – Improvements to the paving in the area have enhanced the look, giving it a much more appealing appearance.
  • New street planting and street furniture – We have added planters and bench seating to provide a different feel to the street, ‘greening up’ the environment. An area for restaurants to cater for outdoor street seating and standing for customers has also been created.
  • Improved street lighting – Improved street lighting in this public realm area will help to reduce anti-social behaviour by ensuring it is well lit.
  • Parking changes – We have removed general parking and narrowed the carriageway for moving cars to the nearby parking spaces. A loading bay has been provided to service the businesses in the street.
