Animal boarding and home boarding licence

Includes information on how to apply for an animal boarding and home boarding licence

Introduction to licences

If you run a boarding kennels or cattery, you need a licence from us. You must also apply for a licence if you offer home boarding or dog day care at your home for any length of time in return for payment.

Information is available by reading the animal boarding establishment conditions and guidance.

Existing licence holders and anyone planning to apply for a licence should also read the Animal Welfare (licensing of activities involving animals) Regulations 2018.

When we get your application, we will arrange an inspection. We will check licence conditions that cover:

  • accommodation
  • food, drink and exercise
  • precautions to prevent the spread of disease
  • measures in the event of an emergency
  • records kept at the premises

Full information about the rating system can be found in DEFRA’s Procedural Guidance for Local Authorities.

To apply for this licence please complete the animal boarding application form.
