Introduction
You can request copies of certificates online or in writing. When you apply you should provide as much information as possible about the entry you are looking for so that we can identify it correctly.
Request a copy certificate online
You can apply for a copy certificate for births, marriages, civil partnerships or deaths in Somerset here.
The fee for a copy certificate is £12.50 each and we will post it to you within fifteen working days. Extra copies of certificates cost £12.50 each. We cannot guarantee when the Royal Mail will deliver the certificate to you if you choose to have it posted.
Please see the information below about the things you will need to know when you are applying for a copy certificate.
For a copy birth certificate, please tell us:
- The name of the child
- Date of birth
- Place of birth
We will search a minimum of two years either side of the date you have given.
If you were adopted, please contact the General Register Office on 0300 123 1837.
For a copy marriage certificate, please tell us:
- The name of first person
- The name of the second person
- Date of marriage
- Place of marriage
We will search a minimum of two years either side of the date you have given.
For a copy civil partnership certificate, please tell us:
- Name of partner
- Date of civil partnership
- Place of civil partnership
We will search a minimum of two years either side of the date you have given.
For a copy of a death certificate, please tell us:
- The name of the deceased person
- Date of death
- Place of death
We will search a minimum of two years either side of the date you have given.
Apply in writing
You can also apply in writing. If you apply in writing, please include the information we have asked for below and the appropriate payment. Cheques should be made payable to Somerset Council and send it to:

Your certificate will be posted to the address you give us on your application. All certificates will be folded and sent in an A5 envelope, if you would like an alternative method of postage, please send your application in the post along with the pre-addressed envelope of your choice.
Request a certificate is legalised or apostilled
The legalising of documents, including copy certificates, may be requested by an official in another country. This process is handled by the Legalisation Office and you can access this service on GOV.UK
