Somerset County Council is committed to making the contents of this website as accessible to as many people as possible. Under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), goods and services must be provided on equal terms to anyone with a disability.

We have designed this site to be accessible to all web users, regardless of individual abilities and software in use. In conjunction with recommendations published by the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C), we are currently working towards achieving WAI Level AA (Priority 2) accessibility throughout our website.


Navigation & Access Keys

This website has been designed to allow easy navigation using either the mouse or keyboard. To navigate using the keyboard, you can use the Tab key to move through links on any page or Shift + Tab to move backwards. You can then use the Return key to activate a link. Pressing the Backspace key whilst viewing a page will automatically take you back to the previous page that was accessed within your Internet browser.

Access keys are keyboard shortcuts that provide links to important areas of the website. These can be used as an alternative form of navigation around the website.

  • Internet Explorer 5+: Hold down the Alt key and select the access character (see list below), then press Enter
  • Internet Explorer 4: Hold down the Alt key and select the access character (see list below)
  • Internet Explorer 5+ for Mac: Hold down the Ctrl key and select the access character (see list below)
  • Internet Explorer 4.5 for Mac: Access keys are not supported
  • Netscape 6+: Hold down the Alt key and select the access character (see list below)
  • Netscape earlier versions: Access keys are not supported
  • Mozilla: Hold down the Alt key and select the access character (see list below)
  • Opera: In sequence press Shift then Esc and then select the access character (see list below)

Please note that these features are not supported by all browsers.

Language Translations

On the homepage of this website, links have been provided to translated information about the services we provide for users whose first language is not English.

The word "welcome" appears in each available language, and upon clicking this, the user has the ability to view a page of information which has been translated into their own language.

If you have difficulty reading any publications available on our website, we can supply them in large print, on audio cassette, arrange translation or provide a member of staff to discuss the details with you. Please contact us for further information.
