We provide support to businesses and developers by helping them to produce travel plans.
A travel plan consists of a site audit, action plan and monitoring strategy to improve how staff, customers and residents of Somerset travel to work.
We promote alternative means of travel other than car, by responding to planning applications with access needs. This must be done through the travel planning process. Independent businesses can also develop management frameworks as part of their business strategies to inform us of local transport improvements or support that might be needed.
This resource is aimed at business managers and developers and their consultants, but will also be of use to employees, and members of the public in responding to local planning applications.
When you contact us please provide the following information:
- Your name and telephone number
- What organisation you represent and the stage you are at in the process
- Whether or not your travel plan is linked to any planning application
- Whether you already actively promote more sustainable forms of travel in your school or business
If you are an employer aiming to improve the travel situation for your staff and customers, you need to identify the transport issues and opportunities relevant to your business to decide where and how you can make improvements. The best way to do this is through a travel plan.
If you are a developer, you should have pre-application talks with us about your travel plan, and ask us for comments before submitting your planning application. You can get hold of a copy of our Manual for Travel Plans which will tell you all you need to know about developing a travel plan for all types of site in Somerset. This is backed up by a detailed Travel Plans Resource Centre, to provide you with our expert help and support.
If you submit a travel plan to us, we will assess your travel plan against the guidance detailed in the Manual for Travel Plans and feedback comments using a feedback form.
The Manual for Travel Plans is a comprehensive guide to developing a travel plan for any site - including employment, housing, leisure and tourism.
The application process takes 21 days.
Our travel plan advice is free to local businesses, but is chargeable through the planning process. All new developments contribute financially through the planning process towards enabling smarter travel.
The National Planning Policy Framework has a section on promoting sustainable transport; please follow the link under the Information and Resources section to the right.
Travel Plans are a powerful way of reducing the impact of excess traffic on Somerset's road network. They also help deliver the four national shared priorities for transport:
- tackling congestion
- delivering accessibility
- safer roads
- better air quality
Travel plans play an important role in delivering a number of quality of life issues such as quality of public spaces, better streetscapes, and healthy communities. Our Transport Plan contains a travel to work indicator (LPI2) which has been monitored over time, with a target to reduce the number of journeys to work by car alone by nearly 10,000 trips on a typical working day by 2011.
