Mobile library

The mobile library provides a library service to areas in Somerset where there is no static library

Get started

The mobile library provides a library service to some rural areas in Somerset where there is no static library.

It carries a selection of books, novels, large print books, books for children and audiobooks.

You can also borrow DVDs on request. We regularly refresh the stock with material from other libraries.

Using the mobile library

To use the mobile library service, you must be a member of Somerset Libraries. You can join by filling in a membership form and bringing some proof of your name and current address, such as a recent utility bill or a driving licence. We will issue you a membership card, which you can use in any Somerset library. If you already have a Somerset library membership card, please show this to the staff.

You can borrow up to 20 items. Books borrowed from the mobile library are issued for 8 weeks.

DVDs and audio books are issued for 4 weeks for a standard loan charge. For example, the standard charge for a one-week loan of a DVD in a library will also apply to a 4-week loan of a DVD from a mobile library.

You can renew items online, by phone, or on your next visit to the mobile library.

If you can’t find the book you want, ask the staff for help. If the book is not on the mobile library, you can make a request. Normal fees are charged for requests.

Although no overdue charges are applied on books borrowed from the mobile library, borrowers are asked to return their loan items by the due date, or to request a renewal. Late DVDs and audio books incur the standard loan charge.

Our vehicle is accessible to wheelchairs and staff will help you get on and off the vehicle.

You can take a virtual tour of our Mobile Library

Our stops

There are 152 stops around the county, serving 128 communities.

To find your nearest stop, use the index to the routes. Make a note of the stop code and then turn to the schedule and find the route and stop you need. The location of each stop is given, as well as the dates of visits for the current year.

If a visit is cancelled, the mobile library staff will try to inform all the customers on the route. We will renew any items due that day until the next visit. It’s a good idea to write that new date on the date label.

Borrow from the Home Library Service

We offer a Home Library Service for people who are unable to access library facilities, often people who are vulnerable or who may have disabilities or mobility needs. Find out how to access these services on our Home Library Service page.
